Award winning garden design

CGD Landscape Design News

cgd landscape design wins its 6th award for their garden in Barvikha, Moscow.

At the Society of Garden Designers 2013 Awards ceremony in London on Friday January 24th, Sally collected the coveted International Award.  The romantic English garden has been created on a steep sandy hillside and has been seven years in the making with new areas still work in progress.

“It’s the cherry on the icing on the cake,” says Sally. “We were just overwhelmed. This award means our peers have recognised the work – and the high quality of the work – that we have put into the garden.”

The judges recognised the unique complexities of the scheme commenting:  “A very difficult brief successfully implemented to create a sophisticated and accomplished piece of design that is the essence of an English garden.  There was a good sequence of spaces and a high standard of execution despite logistical challenges.”

Wildflower meadows and roof gardens

Helen and Sally have already installed many wildflower meadows across a range of different and difficult sites with great success.  Recently they have become accredited partners with Wildflower Turf Meadows and Roof Gardens.  Wildflower Turf is a specialist company that cgd landscape design has been working closely with. Together they develop and install site specific wildflower mixes for clients who are looking for sustainable and low maintenance meadows or green roofs.

New Homes Gardens Awards 2013

cgd landscape design were honoured with the Landscape of the Year award at the New Homes Gardens 2013 Awards in London, sponsored by the Daily Express Newspaper Group.  This was the ultimate gold award and together with the Gold award they received for the best Overseas Garden, this makes Sally and Helen double gold award winners yet again.

A first for cgd landscape design

Having designed and installed many show gardens in the UK, cgd landscape design won an award for their design for an urban garden "the Wasteland" at the Suncheon Bay Garden Expo 2013 and for the first time built a show garden overseas. Suncheon is at the very far south of the Korean Peninsula.

Award winning Moscow Garden featured in 'House and Garden'

By English Rules:  Published in the Russian glossy magazine ‘Dom ‘n’ Sad’, Sally Court joint Director of cgd landscape design writes in her best Russian about her multi- award winning garden on the outskirts of Moscow.  The client was so keen to have an English garden that she commissioned Sally to create a garden typical of the romantic gardens of temperate England climes (Zone 7) that would flourish in the more extreme climate of Zone 5a.  Many elements of the garden, such as the Alitex glass house, the Stuart Garden Architecture summerhouse, Redwood Stone obelisks and fonts, York Stone and Kent antique bricks were shipped over to the garden, which was built by the respected contractors, Honka Land Ltd.  The planting, designed by Helen Billetop, Sally’s co Director at cgd landscape design, is very untypical of the simple palette used in Moscow gardens.  It is exuberant with lots of colourful herbaceous borders, rose and shrubs gardens, flowering meadows, an orchard of fruit trees and many interesting varieties of trees which lighten the existing pines and birches so typical of the area. On the Move

cgd landscape design are expanding. We have outgrown our studio in St. Margarets and will soon be relocating to new premises in Richmond upon Thames – details to follow.

International Competitions

South Korea - Earlier in 2012 cgd landscape design was invited by Suncheon Bay Garden Expo to prepare an urban garden to be a featured indoor installation in 2013. The design is budget led and uses locally reclaimed or scavenged materials, a simple selection of hardy plants sourced from local nurseries. The garden will be edgy using rammed earth, rusted metal rails and crushed aggregates contrasting with ethereal grasses and specimen trees to provide a welcome refuge in a uncultivated landscape. cgd will be working closely with the organisers of the Expo to create this modern scheme. The festival opens in April until October 2013.

Berlin - Last year we submitted a very detailed design proposal for a new 'English Theme Garden' to be built in the 'Gardens of the World', a large landscaped park in Berlin –Marzahn-Hellerdorf, Germany. The budget for the project is €1 million. This is a prestigious project and we were delighted to have been shortlisted along with 4 other internationally renowned Landscape Architecture practices. The tender for the design proposal covers a 4 hectare area in the North West part of the park.

Helen Billetop appointed a Judge for International Design Awards

For a second year, Helen has been invited as a Judge for the 2012 APLD International Design Awards, held annually in the USA for the Association of professional landscape and garden designers. The prestigious awards will be announced at the next APLD Conference in California this September.

International Projects

We are currently designing an extra acre recently acquired by our long standing client in the prestigious Barvikha region on the outskirts of Moscow.

We have also produced initial design concepts for a private resort North of Moscow on the Pirogovo Reservoir. Here the landscape design proposals included commissioning UK experts in the relocation of large and mature trees, to train and bring new skills to the local Russian arboriculturists.

Moving to sunny climes, we are busy designing the landscape for a upscale residential and holiday complex called L'Amandier, after the Almond Groves that surround the development on the side of the Atlas mountains. The works have already started and should be completed by early Spring 2013.

UK Projects

We are currently busy designing some large town gardens in Wimbledon, Richmond, Teddington and Reigate. Also we have an on-going restoration planting consultancy project in Northwood, Middlesex.

Last year we completed a small and very contemporary outdoor room with a bio ethanol fireplace at the back of the entertaining area. In contrast a naturalistic garden with a wildlife pond is nearly completed; we are just waiting for the right time to plant bare root hedging and trees.

We have also worked with Ruskins Trees on two projects. The first was to create a pleached hedge, in front of a brick boundary wall. The hornbeams were pleached in situ in a town garden in Ealing, London and look impressive despite being newly planted.

The second project in Berkshire is a rural garden and we cleared a lot of trees which were in poor condition. The garden will soon be completed, with new trees, hedge planting, as well as a new meadow which will together create an informal and romantic English garden for the clients.

Take Two – 4 pages in the design section of the Garden Design Journal, June 2012 talks about cgd landscape design, and how Helen and Sally set up the flourishing practice 4 years ago.Previously we have been featured in recent articles in 'The English Garden', 'House Beautiful', 'Real Homes' and in the Russian media glossy style magazine 'Elite'.
